hi there!
I have quite short hair (see my profile pics) and I've been pondering getting some extensions for Burning Man.
I have a vision of very fat braids or dreads (possibly yarn?) that come down to about the shoulders and create a biggish mane-like effect. What I don't want is very thin, tight braids that hang limply down and show huge gaps of hideously pale scalp.
I've been trying to find pics of something like this to show the braider but I haven't come across anything.
Can anyone point me to some pix or give some suggestions as to how this would be done?

Re: shortish, mane-like extensions
Fri, June 9, 2006 - 11:28 AMI have felted wool DED from www.jungledread.com that are braided into my hair (see profile pics, both pink and green). Though my hair is now longer than yours, I've been wearing them since it was about that length (at least, your top length that I can see). Jungle Dread isn't accepting new orders right now, unfortunately, but I can describe how they are put in.
Each dread is a U shape - think two seperate dreads that met and fused at the root ends. To braid them in, you grab a small section of your hair (mine wind up being about 1/4 square) and divide it into two. Place one end of the DED (so one dread-side) in the middle of those two hair bits, and then treat it like the third piece of hair in a braid. Braid down until you run out of hair, then rubberband it off. This leaves you with one loose, unbraided dread and one dread/braid combo.
The trick to hiding the scalp is to use LOTS of these. I have over 50 on my head, and I have an undercut up to my earlobes. The wool ones are quite puffy. I hear Colinette Point 5 is quite popular for this, and you can also make fake dreads out of synthetic hair by ratting and steaming it, which I've done and failed miserably at.
Any more questions, ask away! -

Mon, June 19, 2006 - 11:51 AMJane makes fantastic dreads.
What did yours smell like? Wet dog = wool not dry enough, chemically = dye still in them. -

Re: shortish, mane-like extensions
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 12:21 PMthanks for the info, Bo. Your dreads look great!
I notice that you have a nice blend from your dark roots to the dreads. I was wondering about that. If I get dreads that are a way different color than my roots, it's going to look really bad really quick once it starts growing out, huh?
My roots are a darkish brown so maybe I'll get some that go from brown to the bright colors.
Or maybe make them myself...I'm thiking about giving it a try but I'm not sure.
I'm a bit concerned about the smell. My boyfriend is very sensitive to smells and I don't want to drive him away with wet-sheep scent!
Maybe synthetics are the way to go...though I'll pass on attempting to make those myself...
Is the smell really noticable?
Could you dip-dye the wool dreads to get a multi-color effect? -

Re: shortish, mane-like extensions
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 12:38 PMI asked Jane to make some 'tipped' dreads, so the bases (really, the middle of the U) would blend into my natural hair. You can see my new dreads, which are mostly my natural brown-black, in my photo album - they have green mixed in for fun and goodness.
I've seen some dreads that were a very different color than the real hair. It can look really cool if the braiding is done well, since it makes a criss-cross pattern on the dread.
Normally, my dreads smell nice and neutral. They actually smell a bit like incense, since I burn it a lot and they absorb the odor. If wool dreads get saturated wet, and then are not dried properly, they will get a funky odor. I just wear a shower cap and avoid head-dunkings. Rain hasn't been an issue, since it doesn't penetrate the felt enough. You'll have pretty much the same issues with synthetic dreads.
Check out Jane's site at www.jungledread.com to see the amazing colors she does. -

Re: shortish, mane-like extensions
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 3:32 PMHey there,
I make wool dreadlock falls and have never made them loose for anyone but can if you like. I can also give you a little advice on how to make your own.
I think what would work best for what you're describing is to attach a both dread and a piece of handspun yarn to each section - you will get a lot of bulk this way and the yarn will give a really lovely texture variation. -

Re: shortish, mane-like extensions
Mon, August 14, 2006 - 12:52 PMHi guys!
Thanks for all the great ideas and help!
Spent 4 hours in the braiding chair yesterday and got my homemade wool dreads put in - just posted the pic to the album.
They turned out pretty good! I might chop down a few of the longer ones to make them a bit perkier.
My head feels so huge and heavy! I'm getting the super-tight braids-headache today - hopefully it'll ease up by tomorrow.

Re: shortish, mane-like extensions
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 6:35 PMThank you! I have spent the past year growing my hair out especially to put braid in for Burning Man, went to get a trim on my hair and the girl butchered it so bad that I had to cut it all of about a inch long. It's now about 3 to 4 inches and I think I have figured out how to do my yarn braids from this post! Thank you guys!
